Project Statement
1 billion, or about 1/6th of our population across the world today call the slums home. Our team is tackling the many problems affecting the slum dwellers in Manila, Philippines whose living area is temporary, toxic, unsanitary, and unstable. Some of the problems we’ve addressed are improper housing structure, inadequate water supply, plumbing and waste (sanitation), toxic wastes in living areas, and natural disasters (typhoons), however, the main problem we have decided to focus on is the problem of the housing structure. Many problems arise from the housing structures in Manila, Philippines. The foundations of housing structures are typically made of resources that are not durable such as trash, plastic, cardboard, and scrap lumber, often making it easy for homes to be destroyed from natural disasters. Due to poor structure, the spread of infectious diseases such as TB, dengue, and malaria spread like wildfires. Due to the lack of government help, together, our team is working towards an engineering solution to better living conditions that will reduce the spread of infectious disease, create a more durable housing structure that can withstand extreme weather conditions, provide a more sanitary lifestyle, and create a place that is safe for families and their children to call home.
